That is why LEGAL Tax avoidance is a good thing. Paying more taxes than you owe is just stupid, any way that you want to spin it.
People that have been convicted of tax EVASION are not to be confused with people that use every LEGAL means at their disposal to avoid paying more than "their fair share".
But many many of those people convicted of tax evasion were convinced what they were doing was legal, some because they read about it on the Internet. And guess what, bad advice is never a defense to a tax evasion case even if you got the advice from a lawyer or a CPA. The courts have ruled that way because people would just go to bad lawyers if they didn't.
Geeze, you really are stretching it aren't you? The states and the IRS have audits and they have help desks. Those audits are pretty good at determining what is LEGAL and what is illegal. I've been through two IRS audits and the EXPERT tax advice I got stood the test, as it does for MOST people. If you are so scared of the tax authority of your state, or the IRS, feel free to pay whatever you think you need to pay to feel good. Good LEGAL advice is out there but if you can't recognize it, then pay up. :R
