I prefer a stand alone GPS. I had a car with onboard GPS and updating the maps was a pain. I am using a Garmin 3590 with lifetime maps and traffic that is getting a little old but has been terrific. When it gets to slow from the updates I will get the next larger size and Garmin now has a RV tailored GPS.
Now if a double DIN radio had a popup screen (already on the market) that could copy a phone or tablet image. Literally take a Garmin map app that is active on a cell phone and project the phone's image on the larger screen belonging to the radio. I don't believe such a radio/information center is on the market. I would be all over that.
I don't like the idea of relying on a cell phone for maps - I am a WAZE user - as the maps like those used by WAZE, Google maps and such are not resident in the phone. The Garmin APP makes the phone a GPS with maps resident in the phone. I have been going somewhere, lost signal and with that direction finding ability. A resident map on the phone would not let that happen. I live on the east coast and loosing cell does not happen often but it has happened and most of the time when I am RVing.
