Aug 12, 2016Any external device is far more versatile than most in-dash units. Most built-in head units now have wired and wireless interfaces. USB ports are common. The sale of dedicated GPS units is not what it was because everyone has a smart-phone that has better and more up-to-date features. The spoken instructions can be ported an external sound system. My favorite is using Bluetooth earpiece giving the illusion to the other occupants of the vehicle that I know where I am going without looking at a map. A little planing ahead will help avoid distractions from last minute navigation. I have done an informal survey asking people how they use technology and so far no one has continued using their in-dash GPS for more than a month or two. Almost universally, everyone has gone back to an external one with smart-phones winning out in the long run. Common complaint is the touch screen interface and poor visibility.
