Is it the fridge vent?

I have a monaco dynasty 40'. On the roof there is a large covered what appears to be a vent. What is this large covered apparatus for? There is a crack in the sealant around the base of this vent. I would have liked to take all the old sealant off but the let's call screws appear to be Allen key screws. Does anyone know what type of screws were used for such an apparatus? Is it okay not to remove the current seal which appears to be quite thick and place sealant over top of the slit opening? Thank you for your help.
  • First time on roof. Used to pay people to get on the roof. Looks like pan screws thanks to your drawing. What should I use to clean the old sealant before I put new sealant over top of the old sealant? ?

  • Most screws on many motorhomes are square drive, #2 Robertson screws.

The fridge vent is typically a rectangular plastic contraption. Mine does have four screws inset in the top to remove the upper half of the assembly, and they were originally Robertson screws. (I've since replaced them with stainless screws that happen to be Phillips, as the originals were getting rusty. I've no idea why they didn't use stainless screws in a location that's guaranteed to collect water such as the inset screw holes.)

Typical procedure for this and other things that perforate the roof membrane is to thoroughly clean the old sealant and put a fresh, fairly thin layer on top. The standard product is "Dicor self-leveling lap sealant" for most roofs. (EPDM roofs IIRC use a different composition.) Some people prefer to use Eternabond tape, which is quite good provided it is applied properly according to the instructions.
  • do the screw slots look square? and turn on the frig on gas you could feel the heat,, is the frig right below it??

Agree. The refrigerator vent is rectangular shaped; maybe 8 inches wide by 24 inches long.
