I would imagine it's the same reasons that cars today don't have tanks that hold hundreds of gallons of fuel: space and weight (and probably also cost) constraints. If my car had the fuel tank capacity of a typical semi tractor (somewhere around 300+ gallons, I believe), I would have a range of 12,000 miles between fill-ups, and would know it was time to buy more gas when it was time to change the engine oil.
