We were there in 2006, and being too cheap to do the helicopter ride, we did the airplane tour. You don't get as close to the volcano, but you get to see the whole island. Also less weather dependent.
Our pilot had to relay a message back to the helicopter base when one of the helicopters had to set down in a field to wait out the weather which was preventing him from landing at Hilo to get fuel.
