Just bought my first RV a week ago. No idea what I am doing!

First, I am not even sure if this is the right category as I have no idea what kind of RV I have! (I just jumped RIGHT in). It is for sure a converted 1984 van and I think they call it a "B+". It has the overhang in the front with a bed and it has a bathroom/shower.

I am hoping to ask a few questions about how to get up and running. I have no "user manual" on it and I am not 100% sure how to do some things (Like start the furnace, or even where it is). I have spent the last few days on Youtube and have a pretty good idea about most things by now. But most of the videos are MUCH larger and newer RVs than mine, so they don't really cover some of my questions.

If anybody is willing to answer a few questions, please respond and I will ask away. :)

Thank you.
  • You sound like a disaster waiting to happen. Spend a little money and have a Mobile RV Tech come to your location and show you ALL you need to know!!! That would be the BEST money you will ever spend.
  • When I turned the valve on the LP tank, I heard the gas start moving, but the camper just started to small like gas.

I would address this FIRST - you have a gas leak someplace - find
it fix it before you light anything.

Furnaces/water heaters/fridges generally do not have manual pilot light. All mine had a piezo spark to light the appliance, so no standing pilot light (except the oven).

But FIX THE GAS LEAK FIRST
  • Information on the RVs brand, model and year would help to get some meaningful answers to your questions. Or, if you don't know you could post some photos that would allow readers to maybe figure that out.
  • Wow! I love the response! So I am going into winter so no chance to take it to an RV camp. It is a little of a fixer-upper so my plan is to work on it all winter in my driveway on the interior. Then by summer, do whatever I need to the outside and head out! :)

So I see a long horizontal LP tank outside. Does that usually supply everything? Furnace, stove, hot water and fridge? And would anybody point me in the direction to start the furnace? I am not even sure where it is, or what it looks like. I have the thing in the roof for AC and heat, so I know where to turn it on, but I assume I need to light the furnace? When I turned the valve on the LP tank, I heard the gas start moving, but the camper just started to small like gas. So maybe gas was moving but no pilot?

I guess I am just curious about the configuration of the LP thank to the devices. Is it one pipe that exits the tank and then goes to the stove and furnace? Again, where IS the furnace? :) Just the basic layout would get me on the right path. All the Youtube videos I found on it were MUCH more complicated systems than I have.

A couple of hours going down the road is all it took for me hehe...

Then camping out in the driveway for a couple of nights did the rest of it.... Best for me to learn all these things while being close to home...

In our case everything to keep it going comes from WALMART or LOWES... ALways check pout where they are located when we setup somewhere...

  • Take it one step at a time.

    Starting point

With winter coming on hopefully it's been winterized. The water lines need to be blown out with air or have the pink RV anti-freeze pumped through them.
  • Take it to an RV park. The campers will be happy to explain and show you all the things.
