Kingdome and hooking up Dish

04 Tradewinds - bought 3 years ago. Never used the King Sattelite dome. Was told by Dish was all I had to do was hook up the receiver from my house and it would work. There is a small box in the AV cabinet about the size of a pack of cigs with a cable coming out of it that looks like phone line. There is a switch reading from left to right "on/search" and "off". Above the switch are 2 lights, one on the left says power and the one on the right says status. I have hooked up my dish box VIP 722kdvr and when I push the on search button on the little box nothing happens.

When I called Dish prior to this they said having an HD receiver would make no difference.

Any ideas on where I should go from here other than panic?

Thanks in advance.
  • From the information given, here are a couple of guesses. First, you will probably need a 211 receiver, the 722 is for 2 tv's and a Kingdome of that vintage will probably not communicate well with the 722, although it may work enough for testing. Did you download the directions for that model of Kingdome at the King Controls site. You should be able to hookup the cable from the controller box you see, to the sat in on the receiver, turn receiver on, and then force a search by turning the control box on, and forcing a search. Some do not automatically search on starting. also, one of that vintage may not automatically find the correct sat as you change channels on the receiver. You may have to change it manually upon choosing a new channel. After you have located 119, read the direction manual for that model of dome and check switch. The manual will tell you which switch you should see after checking. It should locate 110, 119 and 129 and will show HD if you have the HD receiver and TV. Hope this may help. Gives you some ideas to start with anyway. Good Luck Bert
  • You also have to hold the button in the search position for at least three seconds for it to begin it's search. Sorry I can't help you with Dish as I have Direct.

One other thing to check...make sure the phone cord is plugged into the box as well as into the KingDome. To check this, you'll have to remove the seven screws and remove the plastic cover. I would unplug it from both places, then plug them back in. There also should be a black, (ground) and a red (12VDC) wire attached to the KingDome box...that's the one you described... Make sure you have 12VDC and a good ground......Dennis
  • prstlk,
A couple things here. First, you bought the coach with the King Dome already installed, correct? Second, it's possible that, that particular King Dome, is programmed for Direct TV, not Dish. If that's the case, you're receiver will never work. I'm by far, no expert on this situation or, have the real ability to tell you which way to go on this.

But, you first need to figure out, if your King Dome is, or is not programmed for Direct or, Dish. I've been told it's not that hard to convert, from one company to the other on that King Dome but, I have no knowledge on how it's done. And, there's one other thing you need to find out. And that is, even if your King Dome is programmed to receive Dish signals, is the King Dome working correctly?

You see, many of the King Dome models had issues in the past. That's why many folks have chucked them in favor of installing the newer Wingard Traveler. The way the King Dome works is, (if you're not sure on how it works) by turning the system on, with the one button or, toggle, you reveal that there's power to the control box.

Then, you push and hold, the other toggle in the "Search mode" for about 3 seconds, plus or minus, as Dennis said. Once that's done, the King Dome will start it's search. Two things can happen at this point. One, it will find a bird, and "start" to lock in on it. It will change it's tone and sound as it begins to lock. And, the status light, on that control box, will go from red to yellow and finally, blinking green.
But, it's possible that, it will lock or, begin to lock, ON THE WRONG BIRD!. If it's working correctly, and does lock on the wrong bird, it will cease it's searching temporarily and, the status light will remain blinking green. But, it (the King Dome) will soon figure out, it's the WRONG BIRD. Then, it will go into another search, automatically.

Now, if and when the correct bird is found, it will do the same reaction. It will change its tone and speed of search. It will begin to lock on it and the status light will again, turn to blinking green. If the King Dome is functioning correctly, once the correct bird is found and locked in on, the status light will go from blinking green to constantly steady burning green.

At that time, the King Dome is now communicating with the Receiver and, when they both recognize each other and, all is well, it will begin sending signals/channels to your TV.

Now, one of the issues that King Dome had, and may still have for all I know, is, the part that locks on to the correct bird and shuts down the searching, goes bad. And when that happens, it will still find the correct bird but, it will only momentarily shut its search down and the status light will continue to blink green. When the system still sees a blinking light, it will begin the search, all over again. And, it will continue to do that, FOREVER!

But, hopefully your King Dome is working correctly and doesn't have that problem. Good luck.

There is a good point there. MOST domes (Tailgater is an exception) Can be programmed for different services,, There are 3 (Well 4 really but domes can not do the 4th and some can not do the 3rd either)

Dish: Western Arc (Far as I know they all do at least one bird at a time on the western arc, more on that later)
    DirecTV (NOT HD)
    Dish Eastern Arc
    DirecHDTV (not compatible with domes)

Dish both HD and SD are dome compatible. BUT some domes will switch satellites under receiver control and some do not, some can do the HD bird, and some can not without a software upgrade.

The Tailgater is specific to Dish Western Arc, IS controlled (And powered) by a 211 Receiver and Does do HD. But you have an older dome.

Call King, ask them,, You may need to do things.

Go to the King Controls web site, See if you can Download the owner's manual.

Suggestion: All the "Goodies" in the RV,, Do likewise, download the owner's manuals.. My Owner's manual pack is rather heavy,, This computer which has nearly all of them on it's HD is much lighter and better organized as well.

Several years ago I made the mistake of replacing my 04 KVH sat dish with a in motion King Dome. What a POS from King not honoring their own warranty in the first 6 month (yes I sent in the warranty paper work). When the in motion worked (about half the time) it had trouble staying locked. Currently it locks on the wrong sat and will not continue to search. King support could not solve the problem over the phone and suggested I replace several parts (total cost of $450) and I'm pretty sure I've been banned when I asked why I'd waste $450 on their POS when I could buy a Tailgater for about the same amount of money.
OP, my point is if you cannot get it to work fairly easily, do not waste any money on a dish that old as there has been many good improvements in design.
  • prstlk,
You may be seeing some confusing information. There are several versions of the King Dome controls and some are assuming that what you have is what they have. I believe you might have a controller with a digital readout and several flush style buttons. If that's the case then you have an in-motion dome and likely the Trac-King. You are able to set the service provider from that panel (1000a or 1000b for Dish) but it's unlikely it will work or at least work properly with a dual tuner type receiver. I would suggest that you get a 211K or Z receiver (2 if you want to watch different channels on different TV's but there are limitations there as well) and start from scratch. If you can go up on the roof you should find a model number placard where the coax enters the dome and you can use that number to download the specific operations manual from King Controls.
