Kohler 5.5 kw generator leaking oil

I have a 16 year old Kohler 5CKM21 generator that is leaking oil and dripping on the muffler. It is leaking on a plate that covers the bottom of the genset then runs out 2 3/4 in clearance holes. I checked the filler tube and it appears tight. It is not on a slide out. Has any one had this problem before and was there can easy fix short of pulling the genset out? Where are the likely leak points? As a side note I stated using Syn oil several years ago and the leaking seems worse. The last 2 times I exercised the genset the muffler smoked a lot until the oil burned off. The genset has 289 hrs on it.

I had this happen on my unit that is same as yours. Mine luclly was on a slideout so was a little easier but I still had to deform my body to get to it.

As I remember there is a rubber hose on the back side of the engine. I has hose clamps on it and mine appeared to be tight but when I finally got my hand into it It was lose and the oil was dripping from there. tightened it up and was good as new. Mine was also dripping on the muffler. Yours should be simular so try to get to that hose and I bet you will find the problem.

    Hope this helps.

I looked at both my manual and the genset and could not find a rubber hose that contains oil. Are you referring to the fuel line in the back of the genset by chance?

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try to find the hose on the backside to see if I can get to it.

  • It may be a good idea to go around the engine and just make sure all the bolts are nice and tight. Sometimes (rarely) they can vibrate loose and cause a dripping. I
  • Since you really haven't gotten any responses I'll throw in my 2c to bump it up.

I had a Kohler 4 that never leaked so I can't help you on where an oil leak might be, but as I remember it calls for 30W straight weight dino. I would go back to that, and skip the syn stuff. That alone will slow down the leak.

Second, that gen will more than likely need a forklift to pull it out. You might be able to drop it down, hoist the back of the rig up and slide it out, but I wouldn't want to do all that effort for a small oil leak. Instead I would somehow redirect the leak away from the hot muffler. Let it drip on the ground and just keep an eye on the dipstick. Even if it goes too low the Kohler has a low oil shutoff safety.
