Kohler generator issue

Hi,
We have a 1997 Damon Daybreak class A motorhome with a Kohler Confidant 5 generator with model # 5CKM21. The generator was working perfectly fine up until the last time I tried to turn it on and flooded it. It took a long time afterwards to start it again and when it finally started, when I let go of the started button it shut off and will not stay running. I changed spark plugs, checked oil (which is fine), checked wiring, checked fuses and cannot get it to stay running.. It will start as long as I am holding the starter button. Anyone ever have this issue or have any suggestions?
Thanks!

  • The starter button on the Kohler bypasses some of the safety issues. When the starter button is released the board takes over and if there is an issue shuts down the generator.

Two things would be low oil pressure and low voltage generation. Older Kohler RV generators were known for the voltage regulator going. Best thing is to find a manual for your generator and follow the troubleshooting section.
  • On my slightly older model. I had an intermittent 12volts going to the ignition coil. Turned out being a relay in the control circuitry.
  • Thanks where would I find it on the generator. Can it be changed with the generator in or will i have to remove it.

    Thanks Charles
  • I had the same problem. It turned out to be the condenser in the ignition system. Pull it out and order the exact replacement. Wire length seems to be important.
