I took my six foot dinette topper completely off and then replaced it by myself. The trick is to have the right size cotter pins or nails to hold the spring from retracting.
when you go up to check it out, you should be able to hand roll the spring wrapped topper so that it is just a bit loose, then roll it out just a bit until you can get the cotter pin or nail right through the end in the hole. Take a picture of what it looks like when you get this part figured out, so you know what it should look like when you replace it back onto the wall.
