Led awning lights

I recently purchased a string of led lights which i intend to stick on the roller tube of the rv awning. I understand I can run the electricial 12 volt wire along the awning arms but my question is how do I connect to the led strip as the awning tube rolls spins when opening and closing. Is there some type of electrial connection I need so I don't have to get a ladder to plug or unplug the led strip when deploying the awning. I know there must be a better way.

I saw an awning at the RV show where the wires are sewn into the end seam of the awning material and at the end is simply attached to the LED strip... No moving parts. One day I'm gonna work on fishing a pair of wires through mine.

Most Honorable Sifu please excuse this lowly student but I did mention such in paragraph two of my post. "Power for the lights is from a thin wire pair sewn into the edge hem of the awning fabric for permanent power."

x2 - this is the easiest and most functional way. If you mount them on the wall just beneath the awning, you can't even see them til you turn them on. Add the benefit of using them without unrolling the awning and it's a win win.

  • Mounted a 1/2 in aluminum angle to wall under awning with Scotch exterior two sided tape.Fastened led strip under angle with same tape.Mounted power supply in cabinet with microwave plug in.Ordered a RF controller on Ebay. Can turn lights on and off inside or out.

A camping buddy has a New Bounder that came a Carefree electric awning with the lights on the awning tube. Power for the lights is from a thin wire pair is sewn into the edge hem of the awning fabric for permanent power. Led lights do not require much power to work so light wire will work. You could probably get by with something as small as 20 gauge wire considering the power demand of LEDs. You might get by with using awning tape to hold the wire to the awning material but the hard part is making it look good. I would try feeding power thru the existing hem edge using a fish tape.

Most of the awning led strips I've seen from the factory are actually on the coach side wall. Easy install and seems to work just as well as the tube mount.
  • You did not say how old your coach awning is. But then I purchased my RV I was told by the dealer NOT to install the LED's in the roller permanently until the warranty on the awning was gone because if the company finds out you added an LED strip to the roller they will not honor the warranty if something goes wrong.

    I am still waiting.

  • The OEM installed lights I have worked on have a copper/brush type round wheel on the wire end of the tube. This allows the roller tube to roll and keep contac with the 2 wires. I would do as others have suggested. Install the LED's and have a male/female plug on one end you must disconnect and connect after rolling out. Doug
  • Does it plug in to the end of the strip? If so, just unplug it at the strip.
  • My original idea was based on what I was seeing at all the RV shows, with it on the roller. When I bought the strip and started to think about it, I could not find a permanent way to install it on the roller so I went with a permanent install just under the awning on the wall.
