I gather you are now a CA resident. To legally not pay use tax on your rig you must completely understand the FTB guidelines including pub 52 and you must meet all of the requirements to THEIR satisfaction.
I did that in 04 and currently the time period is now 1 year. Basically I took delivery in NV, registered the MH in CA (yes CA), camped 3 days, returned to CA to load the rig and left the state for 3 months. I then submitted 100 pages of receipts and a log, turned down the suggestion to pay the use tax with a refund if I qualified and later I did qualify.
There may also be other changes since 04. BEWARE It does not matter what anyone including the FTB tells you on the phone and I got incorrect information twice. The only thing that matters is what you submit to them for justification and their approval.
Take everything you hear or that is posted including this post with a grain of salt. READ PUB 52 and completely understand what you need to do.
Same here, in 2004 it was 91 days if you took possession outside of California. I turned in receipts, photos and daily logs. Saved about $19,000.
