Leveling the van with an app

Recent trip had a couple of occasions when campground neighbors remarked on how we leveled the van.

I used an iphone app: RV Companion

http://creativelogicentertainment.com/iphone/rvcompanion.html

This free app has a leveling feature and once calibrated, will tell you which side or corner of the van needs to come up and how much.

quick and easy.
I place the phone on the counter and do as told, it will give the amount of needed lift in inches or centimeters.

laid out my lynx levelers and drove onto them.
1 shot, done

If you have an iphone already a couple of free apps can save you REAL money on a daily basis.

other invaluable FREE apps on this last trip were:

Gasbuddy....helps you find cheap gas. you can look ahead and see if maybe the gas is 5¢ cheaper 2 miles off the freeway exit (sometimes yes), or maybe 30¢ cheaper across a State line. etc etc
this app saved an average of $10 a day.

RVParky- find campgrounds, costs and reviews, filter for shade trees or pet friendly, 50 A, pull-thru's etc. whichever factors are important to you.
This helped us find a couple of really nice inexpensive campgrounds.

If you don;t have an iphone an old Apple ipod touch can also be used but you'll need wifi access to use it.

another BIG money saver for us on this last trip is we use T-Mobile.
Canada ( and Mexico) are now counted as our "home area" so no roaming or extra charges.
10 days in Ontario and Quebec and no extra bills feels nice.

You may be "Thrifty", but I am CHEEP!

  • When we get to the site for the night Arlene opens the tap and lets a little water in the sink. See looks at the water and tells me where the B needs to be lifted a bit. Low technology but it works and did not cost a cent. Just call us Thrifty.
  • Sometimes even in a B you just need to level. Last week at Mt Rainier the site was a good 10 degrees out of level. Even with the Lynx, I never got better than 3.5 degrees.

For that I use the Android "Clinometer" app, which is pretty slick.
  • I should explain, yes we did go to unimproved sites. However a B is short and easy to level if you move around a little. Since we did not tow a car we usually drove the B most days and that makes leveling a pain, ditto for the awning.
  • I use Android and for several years I have been using the Clinometer app. It gives a bulls eye level that is very accurate and if you tip the phone up it converts to reading in degrees. It is more like a toy since the last time I used leveling blocks was in 2005, 90,000 miles ago. If my bathroom door will stay wherever I put it we are level enough.

  • Thanks for the app tip. I just downloaded this app, and it look's very helpful. Can't wait to give it a try!
  • A bit more basic, but I use one of the free level apps available for the I-Phone. I've mostly stayed in local or state parks that seemed pretty level just eyeballing, but it's good to get some confirmation. Looks like the OP's app makes it easier if you have to do any real work.
