License tags in state of AZ

I have a 2002 Dutch Star and wonder if anybody has and 02 Diesel that has paid a license tag fee in Arizona recently. In Colorado I payed $175 in 2015 and will be moving the MH to Az this year.
  • My 2002 gas motorhome registration was right about $200 this year.
  • I have found that the total of our annual license plate fees in AZ, whether, car, truck, or RV, goes down almost exactly 15% per year until it more or less stabilizes somewhere under $50 per year for an older vehicle.
  • I bought a used '02 DSDP 35' on 2-5-2016 in Mesa, AZ from a consignment dealer. The 'registration' fee was $33. That gave me a temporary paper license plate that expired on 5-5-2016. No fees for title, transfer, or plates. The dealer sent my new title when it was sent to them by the state on to my Oregon address.

In Oregon, I paid $442 for new plates and tags. Tags good for two years. California wanted $1400 the first year and much less, like $140, every year after.

They sell so many RVs in Arizona, at least in Mesa/Phoenix area, that they know all the best ways to save money.

AZ fees are based on the value of the vehicle.

    VLT (Vehicle License Fee)
60% of MFG BASE Retail Price reduced by 16.25% for each year since vehicle was first registered.
From there, the rate is calculated based on assessed value:
$2.80/$100 of assessed value for NEW
$2.89/$100 of assessed value for USED

Plus $13.50 in Air Quality/Registration/Title FEES
  • Your question can be answered here; http://www.azdot.gov/mvd/.
Sorry but I cannot answer you specifically but I have found AZ DMV website ( above) very helpful on other questions.
  • In Arizona the registration fees start out very high on a new unit but decrease every year. On a 2002 it shouldn't be that bad, probably down near the minimum. As noted just give them a call.

    Good luck.

  • There is a formula on the AZ MVD website to figure it out but I would just call or visit the local office and ask. I am sure it will be more the $175.
