Couldn't overheating also be a potential problem? When I first bought my motorhome the generator was doing exactly what the OP described. The shop found that one of the cooling lines had a kink in it when it was installed. The kink slowed the flow of coolant so when the genset heated up the overheat sensor would shut it down.
