Looking at used DP's?

I think that you had a good experience. I would much rather have a salesperson admit that they don't know instead of telling we what they think I want to hear. In my mind all the salesperson is there for is to take my offer to the sales manager. I do extensive research before I ever go to look at an RV and in most cases I am sure that I know more about the particular model than the average salesperson.

"What would it take to get you in this RV today?" You ever hear that from a salesman?

That salesman gave you a treat.

I recently purchased a used consignment DP at a dealership. Other than testing all the components, they knew little about the DP. I knew the owner and we talked extensively.

Ask to talk to the previous owner. Never hurts to ask.

Seems just like any other used RV or vehicle. You really can't know a heck of a lot. Contact the previous owner. Have a trusted mechanic check it over. Look up an estimate of the value in the NADA book and make a low offer.Even a knowledgeable salesman may not know much.

Get NADA estimates, know that they are just a rough idea of value. I offer 20% below NADA low retail give or take and see where it takes me. I never drive until I've made the deal and tell them that it is the deal maker or breaker. Just my way that works for me. Others do different things. When you are happy with the price that they are happy with, you have a deal. If price too high you may be able to get them to replace tires or buy a warranty for you. Just ask for what you want, they can only say no...or yes!

When I found my first coach had the same experience. Spent four hours alone in, on and under the rig checking everything by myself. When I asked for a test drive they handed me the keys and said have fun. I did my home work and knew what rigs of similar lay out and chassis was selling at or sold. Set my budget limit and after looking at the coach I had an idea of post sale work that would be required. Made an offer, dealer countered, we countered and the dealer agreed. Told them I wanted the exterior washed and I'll be back next weekend to pick it up.

You need to do your homework to determine a reasonable price to offer. Dealers need to make a reasonable profit to stay in business but if they missed price a trade in or an auction purchase I won't make up for their mistake. Research the market for the class you are looking at, set your wants and needs, inspect the coach, stay within your budget and be ready to walk away if necessary.

You are way ahead of many others as you did not have a salesman lie to you.

We like to talk to the previous owner. We asked the salesman for the manuals and we found the previous owner there. We called him and asked plenty of questions. We ended up buying our DP and have been happy with it. Sometimes the dealers will give you the previous owners information, sometimes you can snoop and find it.

I'm surprised that bothered you. Most salespeople don't, or if they do, very little. It's to your advantage. The Internet is your friend, not most of the sales people ( although there are some).

I'd be estatic if they let me alone. Many salespeople if they have any thought you're not serious or they feel you aren't dressed for the part will rush you based on their assumption. Try looking at new MH's when a dealer has a open house. They'll drop you in a heart beat if "they think" it isn't going to happen today.

You'll learn a lot more doing the research on your own. Then use that to your advantage in the negotiation process.

He's and honest salesman and knows it's a lemon and wants nothing to do with selling it? He's new? Low key operation? The RV just came in. Agree, check it out real good, make offer, move on.

Why would you not make an offer if you like the coach..:h. Only a few salespersons, (politically correct :)) know what they're talking about. At least he was honest with you that he was RV challenged..that said, he may be a mathematical whiz which is why he was hired.....Dennis
