looking for advice or insight on the Itasca models

Hello everyone,
New member to the forum, and will be a new owner of a Class C hopefully in the near future. I have read a lot of the topics here regarding the purchase of a used Class C and have learned a lot about my future purchase.
Now I do think I know what I want to purchase, being an Itasca model, hopefully in the 27-29' class. After looking at a fare amount of used units I feel that these are some of the better built and seem to have layouts that meet our means.
I do have some questions un answered though. Do you guy have any experience with towing a boat with these units. Not only towing but launching a boat. I would love to hear the pro's and cons performing such task, with the Itasca's or any other model of this length.

Thanks.

which motorhomes don't have a fiberglass roof? yes, after they bought out a TT company, some of those don't.

MY 2014 Itasca Spirit 31K does not have a fiberglass roof. Before I saw this one, I too thought all Winnebagos and Itascas had fiberglass roofs.

Don;t just limit yourself to the Itasca name. You can find the exact same RV with a different color scheme that says Winnebago on it. They come off the same production line.
  • I have not towed anything with my 32 1/2' MH, but I have towed boats many times with 22' and 24' motor homes, without any issues, using the "normal" rear mounted hitch.
The only problem I had was way back when I was towing a 12' or so hard bottom inflatable. The boat/trailer was so short and narrow, by the time I could see them in the mirrors I was already jack knifed. I never had any problems towing 18', 20' and 25' boats.
I never understood the front hitch idea. If you're worried about tires/exhaust in the water, with most motor homes there's a fair amount of overhang after the rear axle. If you put a hitch on the front you don't have anywhere near the overhang that you have on the rear.
As far as Itasca quality, I think they are near the top of the high volume manufacturers. As has been pointed out earlier Winnebago is pretty much the same MH.Not all Itascas and Winnies have fiberglass roofs.
  • I do it like dusty does no problem , please practice in a parking lot not the ramp. I might be waiting behind you. I did the front hitch ,it works but a real pain.
  • I hauled a boat for several years, and never had a problem pulling it out of the water. One place because the launch ramp was not very steep and I had to back into the water quite a ways, the mh exhaust pipe was under water.
With using a front hitch it would a bit of a hassle changing from rear hitch to front and back.
Because the boat was narrower that out mh, I attached a flag on each back corner of the boat so I could see where it was in my mirrors while backing up. That was before the cameras for the back for mh. I would think a back up camera would be very nice for launching.

  • one advantage of the Itasca/winnebago is that it has a fiberglass roof. not rubber (EPDM) or TPO. IMHO that stands it head and shoulders above about 80% of the rest out there.

  • Might want to ask the same question at the Winnebago Owners web site

  • Chilli.....I, too was interested in knowing the ins and outs of launching a boat with a Class C. I will be towing a 21' Pontoon boat with a Class C (as soon as I find a used one to purchase...see my recent posts). I Googled and found much on the subject. Here is a little of what I found...

    1. Some use front mounted hitch so drive wheels can stay out water and it is easier to manuever.

    2. Angle of drop off between flat ground and launch ramp can cause motorhome to scrape undercarriage

    3. Depending on ramp angle, and if launching is standard mode, rear motorhome tires may be submerged and may slip
  • Well you do not give a model #.
As for build quality. Itasca built by Winnebago Ind. we are on our second Winny.
Have been very happy with them
Think if I was going launch a boat with a MH. I would put a front hitch on it just for that.
