Looking to Purchase First Class A, NADA price confusion

Hi all,

I'm new to shopping for RVs but I have purchased my fair share of cars and trucks. Whilst car/truck shopping I've always been able to talk the dealership down to fair market value sometimes even below (referencing either Kelly Blue Book, or Edmunds). In addition to that the dealerships may be 3 - 4 grand above the fair market value.

The thing that is boggling my mind when it comes to RVs, is that it seems like some places are literally asking almost 20k over NADA Average retail value. Now I know average value means just that - average condition throughout - it even says on their website a fair price may be a few grand more for a good condition RV. But 20 grand over and hardly any dealers seem to want to come down. Maybe I need to go back to negotiating school but has anyone else experienced this? Should I look at private party, aka Craigslist?
  • There are two different NADA readings out there. If you are looking at the guide on the internet for RV's, do not use any options, all the standard features seem to be figured in for the most part. If using the Book, this seems to be at a base price and you will need to add all the features in that your vehicle has. Now, some industrious people will take the internet book, and add all the features on to that and come up with a new value on their own. I had this done to us a couple of times a year ago when we were looking. Makes for some really skewed values. Hope this may help, Happy Trails Bert
  • Internet NADA is different than the paper back NADA that you have to buy.
  • Pay no attention to their asking price. You want to shoot for the low NADA value without add-ons. Chances are that you'll get it (or close) without too much negotiating.
