How does the transmission fluid look? Dirty, burnt, is the level correct?
That's where I would start.
incorrect fluid level wont cause no first gear if it was that low it would have no gear. Those electronic overdrives are a complicated trans I would seek out a person whom knows that particular trans and let him repair it.I use to work on those a bit sounds like the low/reverse band may be burnt out
just remembered something else! does it seem to stay in 2 nd gear?
sometimes when there a engine problem the check engine lite comes on and they go into whats called limp home mode 2nd gear only
Thanks. I'm just stabbing at the simple things to check. I do think the fluid should be checked for condition. Hopefully it's just a little dirt/Crud causing the problem.
It's a 94 Brave with 110,000 miles. Maybe the transmission was never serviced?
There are an amazing number of people out there who do not know that trannies need service, just like engines!
You grouped my quote in your blanket statement no where did I say the trany did not need servicing!!! However non servicing usually does not cause the loss of low gear and that's the OP complaint
