Well,I thought I had a simple fix for this problem. Got up this morning and added a quart of coolant to the overflow tank, started it up and the light and buzzer immediately stopped. I thought wow, easy fix.
So I headed down the road and after about 30 miles the light came back on again. I pulled into a town and bought a new radiator cap since I had seen a little seepage on the tank and also added a little more coolant(even though the site glass showed full). Unfortunately the light and buzzer stayed on this time.
I drove another 20 miles to a Cummins shop and asked them to test the sensor and/or get a new one. The sensor had continuity and voltage, so they didn't understand why the alarm was on. They thought maybe the sensor was shorted out.
They had a new sensor in stock and put it in, but that didn't solve the problem, so I had them pull the alarm out of the dash. They only charged me for a half hour labor and $26 for the switch, so I was okay with that.
The problem isn't fixed, but at least I can drive it without the alarm blaring. I just watch the temp gauge(like I have done for 40 years on vehicles) and will check coolant level each morning.
I don't want to spend thousands trying to figure this out and I am still able to be rolling down the road until I decide if I want to dig into this problem later.
