I read this whole thread and was starting to get concerned - I've had mine filled 3 times since I've owned it and never cracked open any sort of valve. The guy that filled it the first 2 times just hooked it up and it stopped pumping by itself. Gauge said full.
The last time I had it filled I could tell the guy didn't know what he was doing. The second he turned the pump on there was liquid propane spewing everywhere out of the fill fitting. He got someone else to do it and it was fine.
Since mine's over 30-years old, and filling it without messing with the vent/valve seems to work, I'm not going to tempt fate by opening it next fill.
