LP Gas Odor question

This might be dumb but... when we go into the RV it has a pretty strong propane gas odor. The tank has been on all winter. I forgot to turn it off. The tank looks like it's reading empty and the electronic levels gauge says empty. I run the heater and it just blows out cold air. The LP alarm near the floor is not going off, but the odor is pretty heavy. Any suggestions?

My rig is a 36 Winnebago Brave.

  • batteries reading same full charge. not hot. pulled the LP alarm and see no expiration date, but a red stamped April 2000 was on it. guessing the manufacture date. will look at replacing that. Afraid to light the stove to test the burners.
  • Do you have a pilot light? If so, I'd think that during a cold spell, when there was very little propane left in the tank, the pilot light went out because of low pressure. Then during the day, when it's warm enough for vapors of propane to vent out the pilot light tube you get a whiff. It's noticeable but does not often cause the LP leak detector to sound.

If you have electric igniters, well, then it's probably the grey tank smell coming up through dried out P traps.

Just saw your last post...kinda sounds like a venting battery.
  • Stove knobs were in the off position. I start to get a headache if I'm out there too long. That's why I think it's gas. The kitchen sink has been covered with the "knife boards" for lack of knowing what they are called.. Fit over the sink and seal it off. There is no odor coming out of that. I turned to stove on and bent down and smelled and it was different odor then what the whole place smells like.
  • LP Tank left valved in
    LP smell in rig
    LP Tank gauge(s) read empty
Furnace doesn't light off (and probably the stove top, fridge LP or water heater LP)

As suggested....check those stove top burner knobs.

And I would also pull LP detector and check expiration date on backside of unit.
    2001 rig......expired LP Detector
  • Many people mistake the smell of boiled batteries with lp ...
  • Stove knobs got bumped to the on position.
    OR
The gray tank will also give off an odor that smells exactly like propane.

My experience with this WAS the stove knob got bumped on by putting some storage tubs stacked up against it, detector did not go off because the propane was finding the sink as a low spot. So it never made it to the back of the coach to the detector.

After you check the stove knobs and they are tightly turned off then clean the gray tank. Throw a quart of lemon cleaner down the drain fill with water and dump and see it the smell goes away.
