m ileage

I'm one of the fortunate few where mileage does matter. I average 1600 k (1000 miles) per month.

Mileage posts always puzzle me :)

1,000 gals at 4.50 and 7.5mpg is 7500 miles for $4500.

and at 8.5 is 8500 miles, so an extra 1,000 miles.

Not many of us get to drive our rigs that far in a year, so more likely 2yrs.
So other than fulltimers, the cost difference over 2 yrs is a couple of hundred dollars.

Your tires will cost more, your camping spaces will cost more, your insurance will cost more, and your tow setup will cost more.

Mileage isn't the issue for most folks.

I get 7.5 mpg on a 39 foot coach driving 65 mph.

We weigh in at around 34,000 pounds and average 8-9 MPG running about 62 MPH towing our car. Talking to CC owners with the 45-foot heavier coaches they seem to run about 6.5 MPG.

It all depends on the age of the coach, weight, size of engine, wind, traffic, speed and terrain.

Our 38'/ 27,000/2002 gets 8 to 9+ traveling at 62 mph with a toad. Without a toad we may do slightly better but with AC/genny running less.

My first DP was a Coachmen with a 5.9L Cummins and I got an honest 10 mpg. However, I now drive an American Coach with a 8.3L Cummins and according to my computer I average about 8. A lot depends on how you drive and the tow vehicle doesn't seem to affect the mileage. My current coach has a "sweet spot" around 65-66 mph where it seems to get the best mileage. Your results may vary. However, the comfort and ride quality will more than make up for the cost of driving it. Have fun!

We are in a 2012 Dutch Star, 43 foot, tag axle. Last weigh-in was a little over 40,000 pounds (don't have the exact figure in front of me right now). We live fulltime on the road so everything we own is in here. We also tow a 2013 CRV. We are averaging 8.5 mpg, and that includes all the mountain driving out west, etc. Traveled 16 states last year. Now, we are in no hurry and average about 64 mph while on the freeway. Happy travels!!

The heavy coaches like the old Bluebird Wanderlodge with the big DD only get five miles per gallon, but they weigh around 45K lbs.
