Macerator Hose Replacement

Hi, everyone,

After searching this and other forums, it seems the best thing to do is replace the busted white macerator hose on my 2008 Roadtrek 170 with a Thetford Sanicon hose.

I want to make sure I order a hose that will work. Does anyone know if this Thetford 70424 21' hose is the one I need, and if it is long enough?

Thanks!
  • we use a regular water hose (non-white) that is 25' long to pump into the back of truck. That hose seems a bit pricey at $71+shipping! looks like you would have to use the adapter pictured.
  • You can buy a one inch hose for outdoor water landscaping pond pumps at Home Depot or Lowes for about 20 bucks. It is twenty feet long and you can shorten it if you want to match the length of the original hose. Now, it is not the quality of the Sanicon hose (which I now have in my C) but I replaced the one on our Roadtrek with the HD/Lowes hose and it had worked great for over three years when I sold the RT. Incidentally, I cut the hose down to the length of the original RT hose and it made almost two hoses, one to spare. So, really, two for twenty bucks. All I know is that it worked great for us. I carried the spare hose coiled up in the cover of the continental kit spare tire.
  • The advantage of the Sanicon hose is storage. I bought a sanicon portable system and the 7ft to 21 ft hose fits nicely in the box. I also have a 75ft 3/4 inch contractors water hose I cut in half to use when I need to pump longer distance. With the fittings and caps the hoses store easily and nothing leaks out of them.
  • Thanks for the replies. They lead me to more questions :).

    1. How much of an advantage is the retractable feature on the Thetford hose?

    2. Will a normal hose curl up in the rather limited left-side compartment on the Roadtrek 170?

    3. Does the unseen end of the hose attach with a regular hose clamp?

    4. How hard of a job is it? Would ramps do or would I need a lift or pit for access?

    Thanks again!
  • Bob answered a couple of questions while I was writing my questions. Thanks!

I use the Thetford hoses, it is really convenient and works really well for me. with my setup I don't have to disconnect the hose from the macerator, and it is really easy to stuff the retractable hose back in and around the macerator. I put a PVC cap on the end of it to stop stuff from leaking out, works great.
  • Yes, for me the whole point of a macerator is having a sealed system that never has to be opened up (except the business end of the hose). The Thetford hose is perfect for this.
  • I'd go for the Thetford hose. This is a part that you really only want to buy once.
  • Thanks everyone, I got the 21' Thetford hose.

I know the hose stretches, but I'm concerned the 21' won't be long enough to make the run under the RT170 and still have sufficient length to dump. And if it's stretched under the van, it seems like it would be very vulnerable to puncture.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Is the Thetford hose long enough by itself? Should I use 1" landscaping hose under the van and then couple the Thetford hose to that? If so, where is the best place to couple?

    Thanks again!
