LOL. I posted a thread about this very topic a couple of years ago when I discovered this and had my thread deleted as people were too prudish to talk about poop. They even commented on my "childish" use of the word "poop", which was funny as my kids were toddlers and infants at the time so we talked about "poop" all the time!

Yes, there is a trick to pooping in an RV toilet. The trick is, as was mentioned, you have to fill the bowl with water first. That's why the toilet has to separate levers - one to allow water into the bowl and the second to open the flapper valve.

If you are doing something "messy"...I fill the bowl about 1/3 way with water, then lay 2 strips of toilet paper across the water...when you are done flush the mess.

If you are going to be dumping regularly, you don't really have to worry about cleaners "affecting" the black tank chemicals - mostly those are there to help reduce the smell. If you are doing some sort of organic / biological process, there are people here (on the forums) that know more about that than I do.

If you are planning on an extended boondocking trip with limited dumping opportunities... then I am not sure what would be best.

While camping, we just use dish soap (usually Dawn) to clean the toilet because that is what we have - no need to carry too many extra cleaners. At home, we use strong toilet bowl cleaner, which then helps when I clean and flush the tanks between trips.

RV toilet doesn't "flush" like land-based. The "flush" is more like a "rinse." I've heard, but not tried, get bowl clean and dry before a trip and apply PAM cooking spray. But definitely use the "add water" feature before use.

What type of toilet bowl....plastic or porcelain?

Plastic......careful what you use for a cleaner. Plastic will etch loose it's coating if strong chemicals used. (Check your toilet mfg. website for recommended cleaners)
You can take strips of TP and lay in bowl in an 'X' pattern to minimizes streaks

Porcelain.......use any cleaner you would use on your toilet at home just be careful and don't damage the bowl seal
You can spray bowl with PAM (non-stick cooking oil) to minimizes streaks

As mentioned above, are you adding water to the bowl before use? Many toilets you lift the foot peddle to add water to the bowl. Others, you depress the foot peddle half way to fill the bowl. In either case, this often helps with the flush. Some RV's have a side sprayer which can be used to rinse down the bowl. We keep a small toilet brush on the side or behind the toilet in a clam-shell type holder. As for a cleaning solution, any soap that is handy...409, dishsoap, windex. When you write about toilet chemicals, it really depends on what you use. If your using a biological product you need to be concerned about chemicals that stop the digestion of waste. If your using the formalin stuff, soaps will not matter.

We never use any cleaners on the toilet. Just water and a toilet brush. Very rarely we'll wipe it down with a bit of bleach, usually at the end of the camping season, but not enough to flush down the drain! Dishwashing soap is probably the best to use if you just want to clean it. (Dawn is great!) But really, brush and water is all you need. We brush after every use and wipe any liquid spills immediately. Whoever uses it, cleans it immediately! That's our rule. Nothing worse than lifting the lid and seeing a horrid mess. Keep water in the bowl. It makes a seal from the tank below and keeps smells from happening.

By the way, dishwashing water is good for your black tank. It will help clean it. So FREELY pour your dishwashing water down the toilet. Do this, and you'll never need chemicals in the black tank. And the dishwashing water will clean the bowl too.

I hope you are filling the bowl with water before using it. Otherwise I've sure it would make a mess. The large volume of water helps to keep things from "sticking" and also helps make the "flush" a bit more powerful.
