This is going to sound wacko, but get some cat fur and sprinkle it around.
Any cat owner should be able to help you out. This has worked for me a few times, in rental houses and aparrments.
Of course, borrowing the actual cat is even more effective, but I assume there is some reason you don't want to do that. (The cats don't have to actually catch the mice; they can just sit around and look fearsome and the mice will leave.)
