I use snap traps with no bait. I would think the peanut butter would encourage them to come inside if they smell it.
Mice are dumb...they run right over the traps with no bait. They crawl all over everything and don't know what a trap is. Put them against the wall, they follow walls.
I use long tongs to pick them up and dump them in the trash. Once you catch a couple you will get over that "I don't want to hurt them". They are destructive pests.
