Several versions of this have been at Overland Expo for many years. Cool idea, but it's just a tent off a car, like hitch tents.

^^ That's interesting that a tent on the roof is legal, but one on the ground wouldn't be.

There is a company out west that rents minivans with a similar tent thing on the roof. I think it sleeps two. It sits on a roof rack also.

I was camping at Oceanside (Ca.) Harbor last weekend and there was a couple of surfers that had a similar setup on their Toyota Land Cruiser. That was legal there. A tent would not be allowed.

He has a toilet in there too - it is over the sunroof and there is a bucket in the car...

If I wanted a tent that high up, I could buy a trailer that is intended for Jeeps which does the same thing, and also provides space for a Porta-Potti, stove, and other sundries.

It is a nice idea, but a small motorcycle tent trailer just seems more sensible.

I would rather just have a tent. It would be a lot easier plus you have the car to use and can leave the tent up.

I just passed a Honda Element with the pop top this past Saturday on the freeway and saw one last summer in Oxnard. There was some postings here about it. The pod actually looks more doable than the element and of course can be applied to many more vehicles.
