Mobile Tire Shop?

Would you use a mobile tire shop to change out your tires even if you weren't stranded?

I'm taking off for a 1,500 mile trip starting in 9 days and don't wish to take my rig in to get the front tires changed. I was wondering if it was much more expensive or there was some other reason why I wouldn't want to call a mobile tire repair shop to come out and replace my front two tires.

  • I went to a tire place and they had two trucks who were mobile pull up in the front of the building. They were working on me and a big truck together. They balanced the tires too.
  • If I trusted a mobile mechanic to change one tire on my coach, I'd certainly trust him to change all of the tires. Since I use the RV balancing beads, balancing the tires is as simple as throwing in a bag of beads as he mounts the tires. At least with a mobile mechanic, I can watch him pretty closely to insure that he is doing things right, as opposed to a shop that might not let you be out in the area where the mechanics are working.
  • Well...there seems to be one around Lancaster, Pa.. Coming into a cg one afternoon, the owner of a brand new motorhome didn't want to wait online to register. So, he entered the CLEARLY MARKED "Exit Only" lane....ran over the treadles and promptly blew out all 6 tires.

Took about 6 hours, I think, but new tires all around. VERY expensive weekend for this guy and a VERY angry wife.

As far as what you want to do....I suggest you replace your tires at a shop...and use the "portable" guys only for an emergency like a blow-out. Seems most shops now use balancing beads (like "Equal")....easy and fast...and they work....no reason why a on-the-road guy wouldn't use them either.
  • I've only used then in a emergency! And they had the equipment on the truck to balance.
  • I bought ties from an authorized michelin truck tie dealer one time and he is still an authorized dealer today and all he had was a warehouse and about 4 trucks. Didn't know this when I bought the tires based on michilen's recommendation which was a warranty deal. The guy mounted my tires in his parking lot which was all he had. He even tried to get me to raise all corners of the motor home with my jacks so he wouldn't have to bring his out. I will never go back to him.
  • Pat at Pro Tire in Denton TX came to our campground and changed all 6 tires on our Class A and did laser alignment. We bought B F Goodrich at his suggestion. Load range H. B F Goodrich is owned by Michelin and made in America. We are very happy with them after over 50,000 miles. His number used to be 940-367-0830. About the best bet for RV parks is Shady Creek in Aubrey but there are no trees. You could also ask Pat if he could suggest a place where he could do the tires.
  • You do want to have your front tires balanced. A mobile service could use balancing beads. Make sure they re-torque the lug nuts after driving the unit for a few miles. Frankly, I don't know what time you would save using a mobile tire service. I would think it will be more costly for both the tires and install.
  • I would imagine it is much more expensive. If there was a problem with the tire, will the mobile guy stand behind them? I would take the time to go to a tire shop (national type) that way if you have trouble, you have someone to turn to.

I don't know. I'll ask. But my old ones weren't balanced either.
