I'm in the same boat... I thought GM's 4500 was a completely new offering....
I first found the GM 4500 of today on the internet site in mid 2012
Chevy Express 4500. The real "medium duty" Chevy 4500, 5500,& 6500 were called the Kodiak like this
2003 Chevy Kodiak C4500. As far as I know those were never built as cut-aways, but this
2005 Chevy Kodiak C5500 was very popular. The 5500 had a GVWR of 19,000 lbs and later increased to 20,000 lbs. When Chevy got into financial difficulties, the medium duty Kodiak stopped production.
The Kodiak 5500 was what was called the 2-Ton truck. (1500-1/2 Ton, 2500-3/4 Ton, 3500-1 Ton, 4500-1-1/2Tons, and the 5500-2Ton) Many motorhome converters used this cut-away as it had basically the same dimensions and close in price to the 4500. The first may have been the GulfStream Endura, then the Jayco Seneca, then the Big Foot 4000, then the Born Free President to name a few.
Sad to see them discontinued. I managed to drive a 2005 36' about 500 miles with the Duramax diesel and Allison transmission, got 16 miles to the gallon. Handled like a big pickup.
