Most reliable RV systems

I read on here all the time about Norcold 1200 refer failures, swinteck slide failures, hyd jacks not working, steps failing etc it makes me hesitant to buy a newer MH. My question is which newer systems in your expierence seem to be the most reliable? My MH is 20 years old along with the systems and I have had problems with every thing but the slide, two AC's, and furnace which have never failed(yet). Circuit boards, igniters etc have been replaced and repairs done on all the other systems, but are all 20 years old and are all currently working. Are older systems more reliable? The newer gas chassis seem to be better along with the house construction but which systems are better and which should one stay away from when looking for a newer MH say from 2006 to the present?

  • All mechanical things can break, all mechanical items will fail one day if used enough. Many of the Norcold and Schwintek issues were caused by bad installation. Maybe the factory's did a better job of quality control in 1996 than the do in 2016. I have found my 2015 coache's equipment just as reliable as my 1998's equipment was.

The new coaches have a lot more technology in them so maybe there is a little more that can go wrong but that technology makes then a lot of fun to own and drive.
  • The problems with the Ford V10 and spark plugs was corrected. You shouldn't be fearful of buying a V-10. The one we have is 16 almost 17 yrs old and is still purring like a kitten. No spit out plugs.
  • Both of the big names in fridges have had an unacceptable number of extreme problems and every slide system can have issues.
Trying to come up with a list of brands for the common systems we use and that everyone on here will agree are high quality isn't a realistic goal.

So Campfire Time and Bear 11 you guys believe The Norcold 1200 refer and Swinteck slides are good systems?
  • Gjac, It's my belief (and I could be wrong) and I agree with you that older systems are more reliable! I would like to buy a new coach and I'm a die hard Winnebago guy, but I would be fearful to buy a new Winnebago from what I'm hearing from posters. If I was to upgrade it would be a DP around 2007-2008. I don't like the new gassers with Ford motors after buying a new 1999 Ford V-10 Triton that spit out spark plugs. And, I don't know why Chevy small block motors aren't being used those New Generation motors can put out up to 600 HP?
  • Be sure to keep in mind chances are you will only see complaints posted in the various RV related Forums. It's rare to see someone post when they are completely satisfied with a system or RV.

Of the millions of RV owners these RV forums are only a small sampling. I doubt if the majority of RV owners read the forums and even fewer actually post in the forums. So it may seem as if certain systems, RV manufacturers or models of RVs have lots of problems.

We have had numerous RVs from various manufacturers from a camper shell (cap), MHs, TTs and our current 5th wheel. Most were brand new and each had their share of initial problems due to poor quality control and most had problems throughout the years of use that I would classify as due to wear and tear. I can't think of any problems that were due to early unexpected failure.

Also some failures may be attributable to user error. For example one RV'er had an engine in his tow vehicle go bad early. It turned out that he had over revved it coming down a long grade because he hadn't used proper braking/hill descent techniques towing his very heavy 5th wheel. The engine was replaced under warranty and he had an exhaust brake added to make sure it wouldn't happen again.
  • You will read about all the bad experiences but not the good ones. The good far out number the bad. We just don't have an accurate picture.

Twenty years ago few people had Internet access but if every had it back then you'd read the same stories about failures.
