You also have to consider that "back in the day" there was no Internet. Issues and problems were what you heard from your favorite mechanic. Aside from that we had no other way to know what the common issues were.
Today people can and do post every complaint about every little thing. Few people post how great their experiences have been with a given product. All you see is negative.
These negative posts shape our perceptions. Perception is reality.
