Moving from a 5ver to Class C?

We’ve owned our 5th wheel for 13 years and it was one of the best investments of our life. Having visited 48 states including Alaska, I couldn’t begin to detail all the wonderful adventures we’ve had with our Hitchhiker. In life nothing stays constant, age and some health issues have started us considering downsizing to a Class C. I know in the world of RVs there are many tradeoffs, price, space, convenience etc. I’d be interesting in hearing from other RVers that may have taken this same route. Is a Class C a bit less physical demanding than a 5er? For those of you that have made the move, has it been a good experience?
  • We went from tent, pickup camper, pop-up, and two TT. This year in April alone we stayed in 10 different campgrounds so we just started thinking of going g to a C. The wife doesn't know if she wants to drive an A but she would drive a C even with a car in tow. We could even live without a tow on some trips.
I'm going to watch this one and see what others think the pros and cons are.
  • Assuming downsizing into a tiny class C will be too drastic of a change for you, I would suggest you consider towing a car. Though it will add a little work in one area, it will be quite convenient otherwise.

To further the "Ease Of Operation" with any motor home, get hydraulic leveling jacks.
  • I just sold our 5th wheel and plan on buying a Class C in a few years. I like the Winnebago Aspect series.

  • We also went from a TT to Class C. Both were basically the same size. But the Class C is much easier for us than the TT/Truck combo and would imagine the same with a fiver. If you get one with auto-levelers, then even easier. We have actually been contimplating down to a Class B. After roughly looking at the numbers, we realized it would not be a big enough in savings to do it. We were thinking of trading both the RV and our SUV. The SUV is my wife's vehicle, but she works from home. So it's not being driven much. The Calss B, could act as the 2nd vehicle. Our RV lifestyle right now is more about seeing different things and not sitting still too long. So the B, although much smaller, was a good compromise. But again, not enough of a savings to give up the space and 2nd vehicle.
  • Went from TT to Class C :

    Alot easier setup

For us (couple without kids) -longer trips, much, much easier and less physically demanding - able to move throughout during travel, access amenetities and my wife can drive the Class C vs. tow.

Big benefit with on-board generator, with traveling also.

Downside(minor) - spare vehicle once camper setup. We are not towing anything on our trips.

    Good Luck!

  • Went from a gooseneck toy hauler to the class C. Best move I ever made. Should have done it years ago but the trailer was fun, we brought the jeep with us inside the trailer, now I drag it behind us.
  • Didn't make the downside but it should be obvious that a Class C is less work than either a 5er or TT. If that is what you are looking for then go for it. All the reasons NOT to downside don't count if the main reason is less work.
