Mud Flaps

I just picked up my new to me 08 Fleetwood Fiesta and was wanting to put a mud flap to protect the toad but there are no places to put the flap and I noticed that ones for sale don't have the full width flap and a few have flap behind the tires there is only the plastic compartments behind the wheels.

  • Something to ponder: This fall we drove in all-day rain and bored, I made some observations of motorhomes going the opposite direction.

The ones with the mud flap all the way across the rear had a high arc of water thrown at their towed vehicle.

The ones without the mud flap had a much lower spray.

Also, when we traveled to Alaska, folks were actually removing them because they claimed they were throwing rocks at the towed.

We don't have the long flap and we didn't received any damage on the Alaskan trip. We do have the small flaps behind the wheels.
  • don't know about TT's or 5ers, but both my motorhomes have had mudflaps behind the rear duals. The monaco has flaps behind the front tires, too.
The gasser Iput a full width flap across the rear, bought it at camping world, hung it with a couple chains.

Stay out of California. If the CHP feels you're not "reasonably" controlling dirt, debris or water from your duals..you can get cited...27600 CVC...

Other States may have similar laws...remember you could get a rock or other debris caught between the duals and toss it into the car behind you...be safe....Dennis

I also removed the full width one but have mud flaps on each rear wheel.
after removing the full width flap I get much less crud on the toad.

If you look at most RV trailers and 5th wheels you will notice they don't have any mudflaps at all.

  • I had a full length flap installed that was rigid which promptly got all bend up and I straightened it out and mounted it on a couple of chains and it run very close to the road but now follows the road. Sometimes if I back in some somewhere to gets pushed out of position but it's real easy to grab a hold of it and pull it back where it belongs.
  • You can use links of chain to mount the flap. My neighbor has a Terra (sister to your coach) and he hung a flap on his. If you do your own work, you can attach chain or some type of loop to the frame. When you attach to the flap, you should use some type of chain or link. Make sure the two mounts on the flap are mounted an inch or so wider than the frame. This prevents the flap from swinging side to side. With the coach on level ground, the flap needs to be at least 4" above the ground to prevent issues.
  • Find a street sweeper dealer or a United Rotary Brush dealer and get a single strip broom insert (see page 4 in this catalog) and the mounting strip. Attach the mounting to your rear bumper and slide in the brush segment and presto you have a nice flexible brush guard to protect your toad.

Back when I towed with a pickup I had a two foot strip mounted on each side.
