When I replaced the engine on my old Allegro (454-holed piston), we removed the front suspension assy & dropped the engine out the bottom with the front end raised way up of course.
What year? I pulled the 454 out of my '84 through the driver's door. Seemed easier than trying to drop it out the bottom. I used a run-of-the-mill cherry picker.
I don't know anything about Ferds, but with the Chevy you did have to make sure you got a truck-spec 454 (at least as far as the head castings go).

Hi Turbojimmy,
I wish I had a front door I could pass the engine through but I don't. My HR is a 1994 (there's a photo on my member profile). The rig spent from 1994 to 2010 (when the former owner died) being driven hard and put up wet. I purchased it for $3,500 in 2013 so I can't complain about most of the issues I've had with it. I guess my main complaints have been the three items mentioned earlier which have nothing to do with the former owners neglect.
