Actually, some other poor soul may have done that. When I marked everything up with dabs of Whiteout in preparation for reinstallation in the new engine I first rotated it a white timing mark already marked on the damper. I was surprised when the rotor didn't align with the #1 cylinder (and also there were no timing marks stamped into the damper, just the white line). I continued to rotate the damper and low and behold the proper timing mark showed up complete with a white mark. This time the damper also had the proper timing marks stamped in it and finally the rotor pointed to the #1 cylinder. Tomorrow (when/if its not raining :M) I'll look into the #5 cylinder alignment you've mentioned and maybe rig up a second pointer like Richard did.
Automotive engineers should be required to work as mechanics for a year before they're issued an engineering license, similar to the internship doctors go though.
