I have never had a single issue in 40 years nor have I ever had direct contact with anyone who has had an incident. The internet is a great way for isolated incidents to get blown out of proportion.
Still, if this is a significant concern regardless of the odds, it might indeed be best to rethink the lifestyle. All parties concerned must embrace it or there will always be that tension.
