We spent many years and over 300,000 miles touring the country on our motorcycle and have rarely found anywhere we were concerned for our personal safety even though there were no doors to lock or anywhere to hide. We traveled in lots of places where many people wouldn't begin to go and at hours of the day most would fear being out and about in strange places without incident. As RV travelers we have stopped and overnighted in many places, including truck stops and rest areas and for the most part never felt any fear. We are always aware of our surroundings and I never worry about my wife and daughter using the rest rooms or something similar unless I see something that makes me uncomfortable first. As others have said it is situational awareness and your personal comfort level that makes your decisions.
Saying all of that there have been a couple rest areas where we stopped at odd hours, late at night where there were just some things that didn't feel good. When those things happen you just increase your awareness another notch and take care of your business and move on. Life is too short to worry about things that may happen and we can worry ourselves to an early grave doing so.
