I understand her concerns. If someone has never been RVing, there are a lot of unknowns.
I am a Refuse to be a Victim instructor so I am a little more aware of the types of things that can happen. Bad things can happen to you anywhere but, in my experience, they are less likely RVing than in other situations. In general, the folks that RV are great folks so you are surrounded by good folks like yourself. That in itself does a lot for you feeling safe.
People who steal like to go when you are not there. Since your RV is not in one place, they cannot "case" the RV very easily. Also, there is not as much "good stuff" in an RV when compared to a house.
RVs in a park are close to each other so noise is likely to be heard by at least one neighbor. Bad folks do not like that.
I have been to many RV parks and have not felt unsafe yet. That does not mean there are not RV parks that may be in areas you do not want to stay. I use rvparkreviews.com to get a good feel for the RV park and I use Google Earth to look at the area around the park.
I have a deadbolt lock on the door of the RV so it would not be easy to break into.
As far as messing with you because you have a big motorhome, I assume the concern is they think you have some money so they will want to steal from you. No, as I pointed out, it is hard to figure out your schedule and there are lots of folks close to you, so an RV would not be a great target for theft. On the road, they get out of your way.:-)
I have had more "interesting" situations in a hotel than in an RV. I have seen people hanging around hotels that I worry about and I also worry about the people that come in and clean the room.
All good info but there is always the possibility that you could break down in a less than desirable location. In that case your RV would be seen as a better target than a broken down automobile. Help may be miles away and you are left to your own devices.
Of course you have Road side assistance to call, if you have phone service, but they may be hours away.
If you ever plan to travel in a location where you may find yourself somewhat isolated if your rig broke down, you need to decide for yourself what YOU need to do to protect yourself and your DW. Only you can decide what you are comfortable with.
