There are actually 3 big resorts there right next to each other, right on the beach - Ocean Lakes, Lakewood, and Pirateland. They're all nice, and very similar. They each have their good and bad points. Like many other subjects, you'll get very different posts, opinions as to which of the 3 is the best choice.
As to golf carts: Ocean Lakes I believe is the only one that allows folks to bring and use their own carts there. That, in addition to the fact they rent carts, means there is a lot of golf cart traffic. There is at the others, too, since they rent carts, too. I think Ocean Lakes has more because they allow folks to bring their own, vs the other parks do not. Security keeps it under pretty good control, though, at all of them. I know folks that have had their cart taken away from them (and should have!) for not following the rules at Ocean Lakes. Have heard Pirateland is just as strict.
The golf cart traffic really does not bother me. I'd much rather see that, than everyone riding around the CG in their trucks or cars! Golf carts don't pollute the air. :)
We go to Myrtle Beach every year in the Spring, have been going for years. Have stayed at most all of them at one point or another. We prefer Ocean Lakes of all of them. Reasons being:
1. Ocean Lakes is only one that will let you reserve a specific site that you pick when you make your reservation. Their website shows you the physical size of each site, and notes about tree location, shade, etc. for each site. Basically, when you reserve a site with them you know exactly what site you'll have, and how much space it will have. Never have to worry about getting a site too small. None of the others give you that.
2. All sites are pull-thru, and your camping (awning) side always faces the ocean. Pirateland is not like that - most sites there, you back up to another site, and the back of your camper can be right up against the back of another one. Lakewood, there is a little of both from what I recall.
3. Onsite RV dealer/service department. If you have any problem with your RV, one phone call and they'll come to your site and fix it. Very convenient, and gives a lot of peace of mind knowing that if you ever have any problems, professional RV service is right there on-site to help you. I'm sure there are mobile RV places that do the same for the other campgrounds, but its nowhere near as convenient and easy. I seem to recall reading recently where one of the others makes it even MORE difficult to get service on their CG, by forcing the RV business to tack on a separate fee for their service, that they (the campground) gets!
..Someone mentioned Willow Tree RV resort. Bad thing about that place, as well as the KOA in Myrtle Beach: Neither are on the beach. For us, it really defeats the purpose of going to Myrtle Beach if you're not right on the beach. Might as well just go to a much cheaper and more secluded state park somewhere else in that case.
