We traveled for 16 years and prefer the secondary, lonely roads. We had no problems with cell service. The place we did was around Sutherlin, Oregon - right on the main drag. If you're in the west, Verizon is best.
My OnStar service is Verizon and I also carry a Verizon Cell phone. I have been a lot of places with NO CELL service whatsoever. Most major interstate freeways do have cell service but don't have data. I have found that the minute you leave the interstate you frequently lose data and cell service becomes spotty at best. It depends on where you travel. We regularly camp at a state park in the middle of Washington State that has limited AT&T and Verizon cell service if any all. We also have been to Canyonlands National Park as well as Arches National Park. Yep, no cell service. Yellowstone National Park yep most of the park has no cell service. I had to call for assistance while inside the park and even OnStar didn't well enough to do much.
