Necessity of a spare?

Is this simply a acknowledgement that normal humans cannot change those tires and we must call a truck tire guy anyway? It appears that a lot of big rigs no longer have spares as well.

We are concerned about the situation where we are stuck outside of some remote location with a flat. Based on the experiences in this forum, how real is that fear?

How do others mitigate the lack of a spare?

I wouldn't be too concerned about having a mounted spare, but would like having the tire itself on board for a lot of reasons.
Now, with our old rig here, we not only have a mounted spare, but it's in it's own hinged door compartment and accessible from the rear. We also use this area for keeping other things tucked away.
