Necessity of a spare?

Greetings!! -

The DW and I are about to take delivery on a new Itasca 37F. One of things that surprised us about the coach was that a spare tire is not included.

Is this simply a acknowledgement that normal humans cannot change those tires and we must call a truck tire guy anyway? It appears that a lot of big rigs no longer have spares as well.

We are concerned about the situation where we are stuck outside of some remote location with a flat. Based on the experiences in this forum, how real is that fear?

How do others mitigate the lack of a spare?

Thanks,
Jerald Pendleton
  • All the Class A's that I have owned have/had 22.5" tires and no place to carry a spare.
  • If you do not mind paying TOP DOLLAR for a tire replacement, regardless of size, then don't carry a spare. The size does not matter when you are stuck somewhere where you only have a choice of ONE tire dealer. They will charge you whatever they want and you have no choice but to pay, even if the new tire is not a match to your other tires because it is a different brand.
If you carry your own spare, any tire mechanic can mount your new spare on to your coach in a matter of minutes, even if it means removing the bad tire and mounting your unmounted spare.
I carry an unmounted spare because it is a lot lighter and I know that it matches all of my other tires.

Our 2 gasser mohos came with a spare, the 40' DP did not.
  • We've carried a spare since day one, except for about a year - and during that year had a blowout and had to wait several hours for somebody to show up with one. If you have the room and weight capacity for one, I'd get a mounted spare and carry it.

I'm still mulling over that new Roadmaster hitch-mounted spare carrier. Just not sure it will fit on our hitch with all the other stuff hanging there.

  • I would check the size of your tires on your new rig.
Some rigs have a size that is not readily available. If your size is readily available there is no reason to carry a spare whether it is mounted or not.
If you have one of the rigs that has an odd tire size then, think about carrying an un-mounted spare tire.
