If you decide to do Walmart overnighting, the Red Bluff one is a good choice. The Sacramento Walmarts don't allow overnighting last I saw, so you'd have to another 3+ hours if you drive past Red Bluff.
It's about 7.5 hours to LA, so plan your Red Bluff departure to hit LA between lunchtime rush and afternoon rush. You'll hit San Diego for afternoon rush most likely, but you'll get there at a decent evening hour instead of late night.
Drive safe and both push it - your sister would rather you arrive a day late, than in an ambulance.
