Personally, I've had great success with Interstate batteries with a typical life expectancy of 5 years +. Gel cells certainly have their place as well as advocates but flooded work just fine with proper care. I do us the pro fill system which make adding water a breeze and have yet to have any sign of corrosion.
It sounds like your problem was simply a bad inverter and gel cells would not have fared any better.
Currently I just installed new Trojans, not because they are necessarily better than interstate, I just got a great deal on them including installation.
