Need quick answer to a dumb jack question

Merry Christmas

I have a quick, but dumb question. We have a dp with hwh jacks. Can we "store" the jacks without starting engine and building air? We want to do some departure chores today, including slides and jacks - but will not be leaving until TH - so starting the engine would be for the sole purpose of building air - thanks - I should know this, but if I do - I've forgotten.
  • As a guy who has screwed up just about everything including trying to leave with jacks down this is my departure procedure:
    1. Slide in. Wifey prepares inside for departure.
    2. Jacks up.
    3. Water/Cable/sewer disconnect.
    4. Double check jacks. I have one lazy one so I always double check.
    5. Start engine.
    6. Disconnect power.
It may not be correct but it seems to work.

Hmm... We were told to always start the engine and then hit the store button. I wonder if we let it air up a bit first, if that's better? When we store, the jacks seem to drop suddenly because the airbags haven't inflated yet...

So,,, setting up the "level" button automatically dumps the airbags.
But when we getting ready to leave... should we wait until there's a bit of air pressure before hitting "store?"

Yes, I would, just as a matter of not liking the sudden drop. If you have HWH jacks and the jacks do NOT have the velocity check valves, then air up first. IF the HWH system has the optional velocity valves, then the sudden drop is stopped as the velocity valves slow down the force of the return fluid. Doug
  • Op back. Generally I start the engine and wait until the "low air" light and buzzer go off (65psi) before storing jacks. This time just weird departure timing. I did retract without engine start, all is good. Will follow Brett ' s advice and re store when I start the engine. Thanks guys

  • Op. Thank you everyone. Brett, didn't even think of that, great tip. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone.
  • As suggested quite likely that you can. But, be sure to "restow" when you do start the engine, as most HWH systems continue to bleed fluid back to the reservoir for several minutes-- more than needed to just get the jacks off the ground.
  • Op back. I can turn key to "acc" to activate hwh keypad. Normally we build air before retracting jacks. I know we can store without build up of air, but will it cause any problems?no concern about being level for a day, site is pretty level.Thank for the quick replies, we will retract jacks this afternoon.
  • Don't know about your MH specifically. On my '07 Endeavor, I have to dump the air to get the bus down on the frame before leveling. If I level aired up, a couple of my bags will slowly leak air over a couple of days and leave the bus unlevel.
  • There is no harm in retracting the jacks without building up air in the system. But, building up the air while the jacks are retracting is a good idea---the air should NOT leak out in the 2 days before departure. IF it does, you need to find and fix the air leak. Doug
  • I can on mine. Just turn the key to the left and hit the retract all jacks. Mine sits in storage without the jacks down and the air all gone after a couple of weeks so it's no problem.
