I wrote the other day asking your opinion on the class of your rv, A,C, etc, and why you liked it and if you would buy a different class next time around. The reason I did that because we have always had 5ers and are in the market for another rv. Our last 5er is setting on a lot permanently. So I think we have settled in on a used class c, 28 ft Gulfstream, chevy v8. What can I expect mpg, it't a 2006. Any imput you can provide would be appreciated such as the mpg, good or bad with this model or brand. I know the mpg depends alot on the driver, I'm not a pedal to the medal guy. thanks rich

6.0 Chevy V8? Close to 10mpg. 7.4/454? Couple mpg less. Class A has a great view and usually good basement storage. Against that, parts availability, tricky subsystems like A/C, and near-zero crash safety. Class C doesn't ride quite as well, less view, less storage. But easier parts access, cheaper parts and tires, standard chassis systems like wiring and A/C. Most generous/flexible sleeping arrangements. We don't go far enough and stay long enough to justify additional investment and maintenance. Ours isn't luxury but it isn't punishing either. We've stayed in it two months on two occasions and one month on another.

As the owner of a 2006 Class C on a Chevy Chassis, I can say you made a good Choice :B Beyond that the long thread in my signature may be of help,to make it a bit easier than reading the whole thing you can skip to page 4and beyond to see the debate about Fuel mileage. Mine so far has been about 9.2 average on the road in the varied terrain here, and I drive it and don't baby it.The ride quality is also discussed along the way and the comfort and cockpit size difference between the Class C on a Chevy Chassis and a Ford is on page 15 also the updates as mentioned on the first page.

I started out looking for a class B to travel back and forth to my sons house's. There are two really nice lakes around there area and I thought I could camp a week or two at a time up there and not be a burden on either one of them. They could come to me for a day or evening of fishing and what not. I ended up finding the C class I now own and realize I would not have been happy with the B. The A class is just too much home for my taste. They'er big, wide, tall and just not suited to the type of use I have with My Travelcraft. Class C's can get into the big and bulky category too but even at that they'er probably easier on the wallet than an A. My C is 23' and sleeps up to 6 adults has a full dry bath with tub/shower. you can park easily and if you don't have a toad you can get around town with out chewing your finger nails to the quick. Best thing I can tell you is go rent one and see if it's a good fit for you.

No one has commented on Coachman quality or issues. We have never owned one. Did look at one when searching for our first Class C. The Jayco seemed to have a little higher quality appointments and more features that were included as standard so we got it. It may also depend on the model of Coachman, we only looked at one.

I would also make sure that carrying capacity is sufficient. I believe the Chevy chassis of that year were on the 3500 series chassis and it was almost overloaded before you packed any gear aboard. The Ford was on the 450 series chassis and had more carrying capacity and towing capacity.

I prefer a fiberglass roof so our 2nd (current) MH is a Winnebago with the fiberglass roof. There are other brands that also have the fiberglass roof.

The rubber roof never leaked....I was just concerned on how long it would last before it needed to be replaced. We always inspected every six months to insure there were no problems.

Just some things to think about.....

Well all I can say is I get 11 mpg with a 31ft C with the V-10. If you are only getting 8 mpg with a B something's wrong! :B

Born and raised a Chevy person all my life! I searched and searched for a Class C with a Chevy engine and all I could find was the shorter ones had the Chevy. All the 31ft ones in my area had the Ford V-10.

I know my Dad was rolling over in his grave when I bought that Ford but I've been really happy with it's performance towing it just seems to always have power to spare.

I was very surprised and amazed at the performance of the V-10 and it's longevity.

We like the Class C/B+ because its more like driving a large van. You will notice a lot less storage and space downsizing from a 5er. But, we really like the convenience of traveling in a motorhome.

We have had both the Chevy based class C and Ford based B+. Both are good in their own ways. The Chevy did get better gas mileage (9.5mpg-8.1 liter chev vs 8.9mpg- 6.8 liter ford). Chevy had better leg room.

I think you will enjoy the convenience of the class c....however you will be traveling inside the RV so it takes a little time to figure out how to store stuff to minimize the rattles and noises -).

However, there's a big difference between 7 MPG and 10 MPG. We travel 55-58 MPH to make sure we stay close to the 10 MPG rate and to not miss as much of life as we roam about in the RV.

Here's the biggy: The U.S. petroleum industry has also finally figured it out, too. The extra cost for diesel fuel is now almost bucking out the extra mileage one gets from use of the diesel fuel. ;)

RV's are heavy and have much rolling resistance and are not well streamlined. Aerodynamic drag builds up greatly as speed increases. Expect 7-10 mpg with gasoline engine power, at 55-65mph in average driving conditions, with some head and side winds, some hills and flat lands. Cost of diesel fuel and higher initial cost of diesel powered RV's requires lots of driving to justify the added cost.

I have a 30' class C with the 6.0L V8 and we get 9.0 mpg towing a car and occasional generator use. It has been reliable with a couple of oxygen sensors and the parking brake pads being replaced.

We are only 2 so the over the cab is a storage space.
