The ECM only knows timing based on the base number, which is set mechanically, and then programed into the ECM. The only real timing correction it will do will be based on knock. When you set the timing, you have to disconnect a wire on the dizzy, otherwise the timing will slew around, trying to correct idle speed. I believe it is a green wire, but I'm not positive. If you set by ear, you also have to disconnect the IAC, otherwise the engine will speed up and slow down as you turn the dizzy.
Lean will make it miss and pop. Noticing that it is worse above 3K RPM, does suggest it is running out of fuel for what ever reason. Worse comes to worse, I can give you info on how to hook up a laptop to it and see what is going on. I'll bet as it starts to misfire, the injector pulse width slams wide open. If you need to go that route, let me know what ECM is in it.
