In the old days, when you ran out of fuel in the float bowl, the engine would just die till the fuel got high enough to be picked up by air flow. Fuel injection requires the fuel to be under pressure, so as it runs out, the pressure drops, but there us still some fuel in the injectors. The fuel is poorly atomized because it does not squirt, which makes it not burn very well or even puddle.
It probably won't set a code at full throttle, as it is not really looking at the O2 sensor for mixture. O2 sensors are not accurate at WOT, because it is under fuel enrichment mode. So for the most part, it is ignored at WOT.
